Are you ready to explore the crystal-clear waters and breathtaking marine life of Maui? Get ready to grab your snorkeling gear and head to some of the best snorkeling spots in the world! Maui's stunning beaches and diverse ecosystems offer a snorkeling experience like no other. Swim alongside sea turtles, Monk seals, colorful fish, and even rare marine species in the vibrant coral reefs. These snorkeling spots will leave you speechless and wanting more. So, let's dive into the top snorkeling spots on Maui and get ready for an unforgettable adventure!

  1. Airport Beach is the number one spot. The beach's ample public parking lot is adjacent to the Westin Ocean Villas. The area boasts amenities such as electric car charging spots, picnic tables, a gazebo, and restrooms, as well as showers, making it an ideal location for snorkeling enthusiasts.

Airport Beach also benefits from its quiet surroundings, unlike Kaanapali Beach, which is typically more crowded due to the high volume of hotels in the vicinity. This quieter atmosphere lends itself to a more peaceful and enjoyable snorkeling experience.

The beach offers a nice big lawn, and its location on the Poly Boardwalk means that visitors can also explore the surrounding area while they are there. The water is clear and home to a wide variety of fish, including many Moray eels, and occasionally sea turtles. The area is also frequented by scuba divers.

  2. The second best snorkeling spot in Maui is Peʻahi Bay, also known as "Jaws." Located just south of Napili Bay, Peʻahi Bay is famous for its abundance of sea turtles. Snorkelers can access a cove on the south side of the bay via a path, where they can swim alongside these majestic creatures. However, visitors are reminded not to touch the turtles as they are protected by law. Snorkeling with a buddy is highly recommended for safety, as well as refraining from feeding the fish.

  3. Another noteworthy snorkeling spot that made it onto the top five is Honolua Bay, a marine conservation area that boasts stunning rainforest views and ancient temples. Although the beach may be rocky, the bay is well-protected during the winter and offers excellent snorkeling opportunities. Visitors are encouraged to respect the area's sacred land and refrain from damaging the environment.

  4. Napili Bay, located in Northwest Maui, is a must-visit spot for snorkeling enthusiasts. It is about 20 minutes past Lahaina, and the best place for snorkeling is on the south side of the bay, where tide pools are available for children to play. However, we recommend not venturing too far out into the water as the currents can get stronger.

The bay itself is absolutely stunning, with a crescent-shaped beach that offers a great chance to see sea turtles, particularly on the sides where the rocks are located. Monk seals can also be spotted swimming in the bay looking for a place to rest. It is important to maintain a safe distance of at least 30 feet if you spot a monk seal on the beach.

While the weather can get a little unpredictable at times, with clouds and rain coming off the West Maui mountains, Napili Bay still offers an enchanting experience. Parking can be a challenge as there is no public parking lot or public facilities at the beach. Visitors can use the side alley by the Gazebo Restaurant at Napili Shores for parking.

Napili Bay is surrounded by vintage resorts, and it is a popular destination due to its classic charm. However, there are no shower or restroom facilities available at the beach. The Gazebo and Sea House are two fantastic restaurants located nearby, but the main attraction here is undoubtedly the snorkeling.

  5. Coming in at number five is Makena Landing, located in South Maui. Though parking may be a problem, this spot is perfect for those looking to see sea turtles. The right side of the bay is a great area for swimming, while the left side is where the turtles are at. Makena Landing does not have a great beach, so it's not ideal for those looking for a complete beach day experience. On the other hand, it is a great place for scuba diving, making it a go-to spot for enthusiasts. Nearby, La Perouse Bay is an advanced snorkeling spot that is best left to seasoned snorkelers due to the strong currents.

  6. For beginners or kids, Lahaina Baby Beach is an excellent choice. Its clear waters are perfect for those learning to swim or snorkel. Lahaina Baby Beach is crystal clear, and the area is like a big swimming pool. It's ideal for spending an entire day at the beach, but be mindful of the reef and avoid stepping on it.

Tips for Snorkeling in Maui:

  • Use mineral-based sunscreen to help keep the reefs healthy. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are the components to look for, usually found in kid-friendly sunscreens.

  • Do not step on the reef, even nicking it can take decades to repair

  • Snorkel with a buddy and stay safe

  • Check the daily snorkel report for the best places to go based on conditions

  • Do not feed the fish, they can find all the food they need on the reef

  • Have quality snorkel gear that fits properly for safety

  • Consider taking a snorkel tour to Molokini Crater or Lanai

  • Respect the land and stay on the trails to help with erosion.
